National Tolkien Reading Day

J.R.R. Tolkien is one of my favorite authors of all time. I’ve read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy more than a dozen times in recent years and I never seem to tire of it.

Now that my kids are old enough, we’ve read The Hobbit as a family and experienced all of the movies (including the animated versions).  Both kids have dressed up as characters from Middle Earth (Maddox as Frodo and Autumn as Thorin Oakenshield). We have board games and journals and a good deal of decor that is Middle-Earth-inspired. It should be no surprise that we choose to participate in National Tolkien Reading Day.

A Little History

March 25, 2017 marks the fourteenth celebration of National Tolkien Reading Day. Started by the Tolkien Society in 2003 to commemorate their namesakes written works. The date is significant as it coincides with the fall of Sauron (the Lord of the Rings). Individuals, groups, and especially bookish-entities are encouraged to participate in the festivities by hosting their own events. From bookstores to libraries, fans come together to share their favorite passages and experiences.

Ideas for Celebrating

I’m not saying you HAVE to dress up but wouldn’t it be cool if you did? Sadly, my kids have outgrown their awesome costumes and Autumn actually has a babysitting certification course so our festivities will be shorter this year. Here are some ideas for YOUR celebration:

  • Middle Earth Meal – we made lembas bread with a hearty stew.  In truth, the lembas bread was Irish Soda Bread with extra sugar in the dough and honey added to the buttermilk and butter.
  • Costumes – again, it’s not hard to repurpose some thrift store finds into costumes but even tacking on some plastic ears and green capes can help.
  • Middle Earth Marathon – a word of warning, it takes more than a day to do it right. We watched The Hobbit on Saturday and The Lord of the Rings on Sunday. It was cold and crappy outside so we didn’t feel the least bit guilty either times.
